O n March 15, as the novel coronavirus swept through New York City, biophysics PhD student Donovan Phua and the rest of the Rockefeller University community learned that the research institution would be shutting down in three days.

Only essential labs would remain open, including those that had quickly pivoted their research to COVID Along with faculty members and postdocs, he was instructed to begin working remotely once the university closed, he says. As far as he could tell, staff salaries would remain the same. The next night, Phua was working in his lab and talked with two custodial employees about the impending shutdown, he tells The Scientist.

He asked what was happening with their jobs. According to Phua, the employees, who work for a company contracted by Rockefeller, told him that their last day was to be March 18 and that they would no longer receive pay. More than faculty members at Stanford University signed a letter in which they agreed to donate a portion of their wages toward supporting sub-contracted workers.

That conversation prompted Phua and his peers to start a campaign in support of these furloughed workers. Students at a number of universities have been advocating for the payment of employees, and especially contracted workers who are more vulnerable to layoffs, as campuses shut down during the COVID pandemic.

Phua raised the issue with the Rockefeller Inclusive Science Initiative RiSia student-run organization supporting minorities in science and economically disadvantaged groups.

They talked to security guards, stockroom workers, housing employees, and animal caretakers, all of whom Phua says were direct hires of the university who would continue to receive payment. A sub-contracted food service employee also said she had been notified the night before the shutdown that she would be paid, according to Phua, even though she would no longer be working.

Phua reached out to Alex Kogan, the associate vice president of plant operations and housing at Rockefeller, on March 18, and asked whether everyone who worked at the university—including contracted employees—would be getting paid while the campus was closed.

At the same time, Phua says, RiSi members began to draft a petition to pay service workers during the shutdown. Within 24 hours, according to Vargas, they had collected several hundred signatures, including those from two heads of labs. How can I go through this and survive this? The city is shut down, just about. Similar campaigns have found success on other university campuses as sub-contracted workers face uncertainties regarding their employment status.

At Duke University, for instance, the Duke Graduate Students Union teamed up with local labor unions to push for financial protection for sub-contracted workers after the university confirmed that faculty and staff would be paid during the shutdown, according to The Chronicle. Duke later announced that the university would pay furlough wages until May 31 for all full-time contract workers who were scheduled for at least 30 hours per week before the campus closed, according to a second article in the outlet.

At Rockefeller, Phua and his peers later learned that as the ongoing pandemic forced the university to stay shuttered longer than initially anticipated, the fate of contract workers changed.

Angie Arroyo, a food service worker at Rockefeller, says she was thrilled upon learning the night before the shutdown that sub-contracted employees in her department would be compensated. However, layoffs eventually took place at Rockefeller. Arroyo confirms to The Scientist that after a month of being paid, she is currently laid off and has filed for unemployment. Other grassroots efforts to protect contract workers have achieved limited success. Students at Stanford University have gone to great lengths in advocating for the payment of furloughed employees.

The student group mobilized, drafting a petition that asked for fair pay, protection, and information for campus service workers during the pandemic.

The funds are currently in the process of being distributed, according to Nayak. Nine days later, the university agreed to interim pay continuation for regular employees in a statement that did not address sub-contracted workers.

It was really kind of sad to hear that they might not get the same treatment that other groups on campus were getting. Shortly thereafter, Nayak and other SWR members learned that roughly 70 employees of UG-2, a contractor that supplies janitorial and grounds workers on the Stanford campus, had been laid off as of the last week of March with no pay continuance, according to Nayak and as reported by The Stanford Daily.

That number was projected to increase to more than employees by April 30, The Stanford Daily reports. SWR then released an Action Network petition asking for pay continuance, hazard pay, two additional weeks of paid sick leave, personal protective equipment, and regular COVID information updates for sub-contracted workers. The petition has now received more than 5, signatures. Members have also emailed and called administrators, coordinated social media campaigns, and received official approval from the Associated Students of Stanford University undergraduate senate in support of their mission.

Imperial College helps one balance an intense academic life with other aspects of life needed to keep going forward.

There was a lack of transparency in the MSc course. I am thankful we received our graded coursework to review, but we weren't allowed to see our marked exams, which I take issue with. Part of learning is recognizing any gaps in knowledge. Transparency also protects. On one coursework, I was docked points for missing material. In reviewing, I found an entire section of my work unchecked.

All this to say, it would have been helpful to have seen our marked exams and to have been able to check for any mistakes in grading. To be fair, there are some really good instructors in the CivEng department. To make the MSc a stronger educational programme, I advocate for more transparency. Lastly FWIW, I left with the impression that the programme was operating more like a business lots of int'l funding. No review here that I want to do.

Senators also established opportunities to inform their respective schools about pending expansions into Manhattanville. This year, many senators have also shown great initiative and have used their position to make individualized contributions.

One of our undergraduate senators continued her work to create a more integrated sign-in dormitory procedure for undergraduate students at Columbia University. A senator from the Professional Schools provided opportunities for student mentorship. He also provided insightful input into the library renovations process. Additionally, he worked with CUMC administrators to establish a better balance of interests among the different schools uptown.

This same senator also worked closely with administrators to communicate Sakaithe potential new platform for Courseworksto the student body.

Undergraduate senators also worked to provide better alumni relations. And lastly, one of our senior senators organized and chaired an inter-school governing board to facilitate student efforts to work across school lines. To foster a greater sense of community across schools, SAC worked to launch university-wide events.

Finally, on October 11th an anti-Semitic message was discovered in a bathroom at Lewisohn Hall. The report enumerated a series of questions, recommendations, and discussion points that were identified by students as compelling in the wake of the Fall incidents.

The report noted that student concerns fell within the following three main categories:. Overall, the investigatory meetings were informative and productive. The guest speakers dispelled many concerns by simply providing information that is not widely known among the general student community.

Our Mission

Students at the college had overwhelmingly voted in favor of unionizing all student workers on campus. The appeal gives the Trump-appointed NLRB — which enforces union labor law — an opportunity to revisit its August Columbia University decision that ruled student workers at private institutions should be considered employees and have the right to unionize.

Everyone is frustrated and disgusted with the Grinnell administration approach and what the implications mean. The NLRB first determined student workers at private institutions are employees inwhen it ruled that a group of teaching assistants at New York University had the right to unionize.

It later overturned that decision in a case involving Brown University graduate students. The president has since appointed three out of four members of the NLRB while one seat on the board remains vacant. Graduate student unions are typically affiliated with a national union, such as the American Federation of Teachers or United Auto Workers. Some graduate student unions have been successful: Brandeis University graduate workers recently reached a tentative agreement on a bargaining contract with the university, while the Harvard, Brown and Columbia administrations indicated they are open to bargaining with their student unions.

Other graduate student unions have been opposed. After their schools threatened to file appeals to the NLRB following union elections, graduate student unions at Yale, Boston College and the University of Chicago all pulled themselves from the NLRB process in fear their cases could be used to overturn the ruling. Grinnell has previously shown an openness to student unionization when it negotiated a contract with an independent student union made up of undergraduate dining service employees in The contract led to a wage increase for the student workers.

While the school says it is still supportive of this dining services union, it argues students employed in other positions tend to be in roles that are more closely tied with their education. Grinnell College will have to give sufficient evidence that the expanded union includes student workers whose roles are distinguishable from the dining service employees in the existing union.

The group has been organizing protests and marches around campus to continue pushing the college to negotiate. Grinnell alumni voiced their support for the student union, submitting a letter with more than signatures to the student paper.
